The Ickes Visit Maine
July 2005
It was a beatiful day, but after lunch, June suggested we go
to Schoodic Point before it got foggy ... little did we know
it had been foggy there all day ...
Next, a stop in Corea ...
Cocktails on the porch, watching the world go by ...
Then Lobstah ...
Next morning we visit West Quoddy Head Light ...
The easternmost point in the United States ...
Next we visit FDR's summer “cottage”
on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada ...
There are only 34 rooms ...
While Eleanor still owned the cottage, there was never electricty.
But as you can see, with 5 irons, one was always hot ...
June and Jean look out over the lawn toward Deer Island, New Brunswick...
Since West Quoddy Light is the easternmost point in the
United States, we next go looking for East Quoddy Light ...
You can only get there at low tide (and we're talking 28 foot tides) ...
the beach they are standing on is under 20 feet of water most of the time ...
Here's the ladder that was in the same place when Walt and Jerrine
went up/down 5 years ago ... it seemed very sturdy at the time ...
We even got back to Cherryfield in time for a train ride ...
After having come all this way to one of the most beautiful parts of
the United States, I couldn't understand why Jean had to leave the
next morning ... they never even made it to Acadia, one of the most
beautiful National Parks where we took our guest the next week.
